Want to show off some truly great pictures to your friends and family when you return from your latest vacation? The gals over at GoGirlfriend recently posted a quick guide for making the most out of your photography efforts.

Since I’m taking a photography class right now, this article is a great read. It’s also easy to understand, pinpointing ways that everyone can make their vacation photos more interesting, not just photographers who know all that camera lingo.

My favorite tips from the article are “Get Clicking,” because, like everything else, practice makes perfect! When you own a digital camera, there’s no reason to edit until you get home and look at them on the big screen.I’m sure that out of every 20 photos lies a truly wonderful one and you won’t know unless you keep your finger clicking.

I also enjoy “Get Funky,” which encourages all of us to be unique. Everyone’s got pictures of the beach, but how can you make yours special? Use light, crazy angles, and focus to make it your very own creation.

Visit Celebration, Florida

Celebration, Florida uploaded by Joe Shlabotnik

No, you’re not on a movie set, people actually live here. It’s set in an unlikely place just off of Highway 192- “tourist central.” This town of 10,000 is simply beautiful from its multi million dollar homes to high end condos, a town center boasting numerous shops, restaurants and a hotel and multiple businesses ranging from banks, to realtors to Radio Disney.

Celebration reminds us a little of the neighborhood in Desperate Housewives. Many Disney executives live here as the north entrance to the town is near Magic Kingdom allowing residents to drive to work without having to use any busy roads.

Celebration is a planned community created by a real estate division of The Walt Disney Company. Disney has divested most of its control of the town but the Disney like feel continues with annual car shows, Fourth of July fireworks, Snowfall Nightly during the holidays and plenty of other street festivals in the town center.

The town also has one of the area’s best golf courses in Celebration Golf Clun designed by Robert Trent Jones. NEV (electric) cars are also permitting allowing the residents to shop, dine and get around town with ease. Like I said, you’ve got to see this place.

Best of Travel 2007

December 12th, 2007 by susan j

Now is the season for list making to mark the end of the year. Children everywhere are hard at work on their wish lists for Santa. The New York Times recently published its list of 100 Notable Books for 2007.

There are plenty of travel-related lists floating around the blogosphere, too. Here are a couple of my faves…

Frommer’s Top Travel Destinations for 2007 includes some exotic locales like Tokyo and Zurich and a few home grown gems like Portland, Maine and Asheville, North Carolina.

IgoUgo’s Top 10 Big Media Travel Blogs is a virtual who’s who of travel blogging. I read several of the blogs listed daily, but a few of them were new discoveries that I’ll add to my bookmarks.

Times Online’s 50 Best Travel Websites of 2007 is neatly arranged by networking, multimedia, and so on.

Travel + Leisure’s Worlds Best 2007 lists the world’s best hotels, spas, cruises, and more.

Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2007 offers some offbeat suggestions for the adventurous explorer.

Budget Travel’s blog This Just In tipped us off to a cool feature on the Florida tourism office’s website (which is available in several different languages, by the way!). VisitFlorida.com has an interactive map that shows where movies and TV shows were filmed in Florida. For instance, There’s Something About Mary was filmed in Miami and The Perfect Storm in Orlando. Check it out!

3 Tips for Staying Fit During a Trip to Orlando

November 26th, 2007 by susan j

Finding the time and space to exercise during vacation can be a real problem for a lot of travelers. There are ample opportunities to indulge with all-you-can-eat breakfast buffets and tropical drinks by the pool, but how will you burn off those extra calories and keep your energy up for sightseeing? We’ve rounded up a couple of tips for helping you stay active on your next trip to Orlando, Florida.

  1. Pack travel-friendly exercise equipment. A pair of good walking shoes are a must so that you can see and do everything Orlando has to offer. A lightweight resistance band is also a good idea, because it fits easily into any suitcase and means that you can do a few reps while your kids are watching TV or your travel companion is taking a shower. About.com’s Exercise Guide offers some suggestions on exercises you can do with a resistance band.
  2. Catch some sunrays. Orlando’s warm, sunny weather are ideal for outdoor activities. You could do a few laps in your hotel’s pool, challenge your family to a game of tag, or take a brisk walk before breakfast. Walking around attractions like Fun Spot Action Park or Gatorland also offer fun ways to exercise. Just be sure to slather on the sunscreen so you won’t get burned!
  3. Choose a fitness-friendly hotel. Nowadays most hotels offer a fitness room, but several have above and beyond the basic free weights and treadmill routine. For instance, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort gives its guests free pedometers and offers group fitness classes. And the Hilton Grand Vacations on International Drive hosts an hour-long week each Saturday to help guests stay fit.

What’s your favorite stay fit strategy when you’re on vacation? Leave a comment and let us know!

With Thanksgiving coming up on Thursday, this week is one of the craziest of the year to travel. If you’re among the 27+ million people who plan to fly this week, then you’ll want to read Peter Greenberg’s holiday travel tips. Greenberg is a Today Show contributor and his suggestions includes checking in online the night before and shipping luggage in advance (good advice for other times of the year, too) To relieve airplane gridlock, President Bush recently approved a “Thanksgiving express lane” from Florida to New England and added additional measures to avoid delays. Happy travels!

Whether you are looking for an action-packed getaway to the best theme parks in the world or a relaxing vacation on tropical beaches, Florida offers excellent vacation destinations for the whole family. Here are some of our picks for hotels that will complete your trip:

If you are headed to the Gulf Coast…. St. Petersburg and Tampa mark bustling metropolitan areas that seamlessly blend nature and culture with its warm, picturesque beaches, perfect for snorkeling and the many museums in the area. A vacation in this region is best taken on the beach. Try these family friendly, beach side resorts:

Bilmar Beach Resort: Equipped with the comforts of home, this resort features spacious rooms with ocean views, along with easy access to family activities. Located in Treasure Island, the Bilmar is in the heart of Gulf Coast fun, including a Paddle Wheel Riverboat Cruise and the Friendly Fisherman Seafood Restaurant, located right in a working historic fishing village.

Marriott Waterside Hotel: This bay front hotel gives families and business travelers luxurious accommodations in a picturesque setting. In the heart of downtown, the hotel offers a serene stay in a convenient location– a short walk from Channelside, a restaurant filled neighborhood, and the Museum of Fine Art.

If your next vacation spot is Florida’s Central Coast… For the traveler that has always wanted to experience the high-technology wonders of Florida, start planning a trip to Daytona or Cape Canaveral. Here are some great hotels near the excitement of space travel, Nascar, and beaches:

Wyndham Ocean Walk Resort: Located right on the area’s only traffic free family friendly beach, this resort is the perfect destination for family travel. Enjoy a resort vacation with everything you need at your fingertips, or venture out to see DAYTONA USA or the Museum of Arts and Sciences.

Residence Inn Seaworld: For an affordable place near the theme parks and action-packed International Drive, Residence Inns are the way to go. There is also one directly on International Drive and both offer complimentary transportations to the famed parks. For some near by restaurants check out: Buffalo Wild Wings Restaurant and Pio Pio for some Latin flare.

If you’re anything like me, then your computer probably gets bounced around a lot as you go from airport to car to hotel to coffee shop and so on (in fact, my last laptop met with early retirement after an unfortunate Starbucks incident - don’t try this at home).

Sound familiar? Then check out the Gadgets Travel Gear Blog’s tips for Choosing a Laptop for Travel. Independent Traveler also offers some good suggestions for taking your computer on the road, including updating virus protection and carrying your laptop in a bag that doesn’t scream “expensive electronics inside!”

While we’re on the topic of computers, you’ll be pleased to hear that Orlando International Airport offers free wifi. Here’s a complete list of domestic and international airports that have free wifi. Happy travels!
